INTRODUCTION

This requires you to be able to look at the process that you perform from beginning to end, to produce your products and services, and be able to find ways to eliminate, simplify, standardize, and automate the work to take “waste” out of the process; thereby, reducing cost, improving the customer experience, and your competitive advantage. This is what process redesign is all about and is a critical capability at the heart of Business Process Management, Lean Six Sigma, and any other business discipline you apply to transform your business to continuously improve performance.

This Operational Excellence training course introduces you to Lean Six Sigma and Business Process Management principles to redesign business processes (i.e., transactional, office, non-manufacturing operations) using basic flowcharting techniques, and performance metrics to achieve significant quantifiable results.

It is a very practical, dynamic, and interactive course that will enhance your process mapping and analysis knowledge and skills to improve your operations and contribute to any continuous improvement, operational excellence, and/or business transformation initiative.

The purpose of this course is to introduce an organizing structure for the business that leads to better products, and services for customers.

Course Outline

DAY 1

Module 1: Define the process, scope, and Voice of the Customer

  • Define the process scope using SIPOC model
  • Identify what are the customer requirements (VOC)

 

Learning Objective:

✓ Define what is a Process 

✓ Know the steps to create a SIPOC diagram 

✓ Know methods to capture VOC and translate them into critical-to-quality requirements using the  CTQ tree method 

DAY 2

Module 2: Understand current state performance

  • Model the process with basic flowcharts
  • Measure process efficiency and effectiveness
  • Apply descriptive statistics and graphs to summarize data

 

Learning Objective:

✓ know how to create a process flowchart with and without swimlanes, using basic notation at the level of detail that meets the objective

✓ Know how to calculate process efficiency metrics such as wait time and lead time 

✓ Know how to calculate process effectiveness metrics (quality metrics) such as Rolled Throughput Yield 

✓ know how to create a measurement plan 

✓ Know what graphs to use for qualitative data (i.e.. Pareto Chart, Pie Chart) and quantitative data (i.e.. Histogram) 

✓ Know how to apply descriptive stats such as mean, median, and standard deviation to summarize data

DAY 3

Module 3: Analyze and redesign process through Lean Thinking

  • Understand Lean concepts and principles 
  • Analyze process through the lenses of Muda (waste)
  • Develop future state processes that eliminate wastes and simplify the work
  • Define standards and standard work to sustain process changes

 

Learning Objective:

✓ Understand Lean concepts such as Muda, Muri, and Mura 

✓ Know how to identify the 8 forms of waste in the process 

✓ Explain what standards and standardized work means

Jose G. Saenz, Business Process Management and Continuous Improvement Practitioner

Mr. Jose Saenz is an Operational Excellence Leader with over 17 years of experience that ranges from being a management consultant to working in regional and global Fortune 500 companies in support and leadership roles driving continuous improvement and transformation initiatives.  

He currently works for Philips Global Business Services based in Panama, supporting the North America and Latin America markets, as PMO & Operational Excellence Leader responsible to drive productivity and performance improvement initiatives and develop the continuous improvement capability adopting Lean.

Prior to Philips, he worked in Grainger as Process Manager for the Financial Shared Services organization, leading a team driving process improvement and standardization; Project Manager in Dell leading global scale projects to deploy new capabilities in the CRM to enable Sales processes across APAC, EMEA and Americas regions; Process Assistant Manager in Bladex (NYSE: BLX) leading process transformation initiatives across the organization leveraging BPM system capabilities. 

He holds a Master of Science in Quality Engineering from the University of Central Florida, where he specialized in process improvement by applying Lean Six Sigma. He is a certified LSS Black Belt, Project Management Professional (PMP), and Disciplined Agile® Scrum Master.
