Course Outline


Module 1: Define the problem you are trying to solve

  • Identify the type of problem you have
  • Define the metric to quantify the problem
  • Document the problem statement


Learning Objective:

✓ Define what is a problem

✓ Explain the difference between cause and created problem

✓ Know how to quantify the problem, including Six Sigma metrics (i.e. DPMO, DPU, etc.)


Module 2: Identify root causes of the problem

  • Breakdown the problem to identify main causes
  • Set improvement target
  • Ask why until you get to root causes


Learning Objective:

✓ Know how to describe the problem showing the gap in a run chart

✓ know how to breakdown the problem to identify main causes using Pareto Charts and Fishbone Diagrams

✓ Explain the importance of setting incremental improvement targets

✓ Apply 5xWhy method to identify root causes


Module 3: Develop countermeasures

  • Brainstorm, prioritize and test countermeasures
  • Create an action plan to implement countermeasures


Learning Objective:

✓ Define what are countermeasures

✓ Apply the Impact-Effort matrix to prioritize countermeasures

✓ Know how to create and action plan to implement countermeasures


Module 4: Monitor progress and evaluate the impact of improvements

  • Define the way of working and metrics to keep track of progress
  • Evaluate the effect of the countermeasures to standardize or adjust

✓ Define what are leading and lagging indicators to track progress

✓ Know how to conduct daily stand-up meeting to track progress and follow up on actions

Jose G. Saenz, Business Process Management and Continuous Improvement Practitioner

Mr. Jose Saenz is an Operational Excellence Leader with over 17 years of experience that ranges from being a management consultant to working in regional and global Fortune 500 companies in support and leadership roles driving continuous improvement and transformation initiatives.  

He currently works for Philips Global Business Services based in Panama, supporting the North America and Latin America markets, as PMO & Operational Excellence Leader responsible to drive productivity and performance improvement initiatives and develop the continuous improvement capability adopting Lean.

Prior to Philips, he worked in Grainger as Process Manager for the Financial Shared Services organization, leading a team driving process improvement and standardization; Project Manager in Dell leading global scale projects to deploy new capabilities in the CRM to enable Sales processes across APAC, EMEA and Americas regions; Process Assistant Manager in Bladex (NYSE: BLX) leading process transformation initiatives across the organization leveraging BPM system capabilities. 

He holds a Master of Science in Quality Engineering from the University of Central Florida, where he specialized in process improvement by applying Lean Six Sigma. He is a certified LSS Black Belt, Project Management Professional (PMP), and Disciplined Agile® Scrum Master.
