Course Introduction

  • You will get an insight into the value of the constraint and the value of your constraint.
  • You will learn how to find your limiting factor, constraint, or blocker.
  • You will find your constraint.
  • You will learn how to exploit your constraint to the best effect.
  • You will begin the process of maximizing productivity in terms of Throughput – the rate at which you make money.
  • You will learn how the rest of the company must behave to maximize Throughput and profit.
  • You will learn how to focus your continual improvement process.
  • You will get a short insight into Throughput accounting and project management the TOC way.

Operational excellence is the result of activities and improvements. They must have a (significant) positive impact on the bottom line.

Experience has told me that in most companies’ management seeks local improvements. Local managers improve their operations partly in isolation. Often the result is the deterioration of constraint performance. Company performance depends on constraint performance. The effect of local optimization on the bottom line is clear.

Early in the course, I will describe several cases. These achieved a lot of improvement that led to very big jumps in profit and profitability.

What you learn helps you reverse this.

You can get a double whammy during the course:

  • You learn how to find and exploit your constraint. You can improve your operational excellence profit and profitability.
  • You can immediately put in place what you learn to impact your bottom line. You can and should begin implementing it during the course.

What you achieve with your operation is the best certification you can get.

The course is unique. You learn the Theory of Constraints (TOC) concepts of focus and flow. TOC marries well with Lean and 6-Sigma. The book “Velocity” shows how the 3 improvement philosophies work well together. You can implement it during the course and achieve benefits before we finish.

A study (Continuous Improvement Trio) where 21 factories implemented one of 3 improvement philosophies – Lean (4 plants), Six Sigma (11 plants) or TLS-TOC, Lean, and 6 Sigma (6 plants). TLS accounted for 89%, Lean 4%, and Six Sigma 7% of the savings.

This course focuses on TOC and operations excellence. From the results, I show it seems obvious the TOC is a powerful lever for much greater improvement.

As DR. Eliyahu Goldratt often said, “TOC is just common sense. It is not (yet) common practice.”

  • To learn and implement the first Theory of Constraints steps that already can achieve a step change in performance. Learn what comes next to continue the process.
  • What is the definition of Operations Excellence?
  • The value of 1 extra or 1 less hour of productive capacity.
  • How to identify the constraint and how to exploit it better.
  • The impact of policies; the impact of local optimizations
  • Deal with resistance to change
  • Solving a conflict with a win-win solution. (An example is the ‘conflict’ between finance and the supply chain. Less inventory vs. more inventory.)
  • How much does to load the factory
  • How to protect the constraint from damaging disturbances.
  • Drum Buffer Rope (DBR) and Simplified Drum Buffer Rope planning & scheduling.
  • Buffer management – minimize buffers, and maximize safety.
  • Inventory management. Minimise inventory while ensuring 100% availability.
  • Good competitive (short reliable lead times) and safe due date quotations, short lead times.
  • Priorities & expedite guidelines
  • What to do when success happens? Do not risk your gains.
  • The continual improvement processes. Working with Lean, 6-Sigma, and TOC.

Managers are responsible for the bottom line – Profit and Profitability. This includes:

  • CEOs
  • COOs
  • CFOs
  • Production managers
  • Continual improvement leaders

You will learn how to find your constraint. You find yours and will then apply TOC to exploit it better for your business.

Rudolf Burkhard, Certified Theory of Constraints Expert

My first job was at Du Pont as a business analyst. From that start I progressed through technical service (textiles), sales, marketing and finally business management. I spent time in 2 divisions – textile fibres and electronic materials. A key success was organising aramid fibre production to get due date reliability to 95%, gain 10% capacity and cut inventory by 40%.

I resigned twice from Du Pont. The first time I left to run and grow a tiny 3-man company. We were quite successful. I quit this job because the financing needed for capex was not forthcoming. I returned to Du Pont.

2001 I resigned again first to consult on my own, then with Goldratt Consulting (TOC), with VISTEM GmbH and now Alkyone-consulting. Two successes in this period were a 40% gain in Throughput at a paint factory and a 30% gain in an automotive component plant.

For all of my successes between 1990 and now I applied TOC concepts and methods. Along the way I won the PwC prize for the best article on the subject of SVA – Shareholder Value Add.
